Versatile Plant

Indeed cannabis / marijuana is one of the most versatile plants known to man. Yet, even today, it is still shrouded in a lot of mystery and misinformation abounds. We aim to change this situation as we explore key information relating to this special herb. Here are some keynotes from our archives.

Cannabis Compounds Have Potential to Inhibit Covid-19

Cannabinoid Acids Can Prevent or Shorten Covid-19 Infection

Hemp, which is a variety of Cannabis, has compounds which demonstrate the capacity to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes Covid-19 – from entering human cells, according to a study by researchers from Oregon State University. The study was led by Richard van Breemen (Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the university) and published January 10, 2022. Think about that for a minute! Yet again, this maligned herb may prove to be what the doctor ordered.

The research team discovered that a pair of cannabinoid acids from hemp, link to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, inhibiting an important step in the virus’ infection process. Specifically, these cannabinoid acids are cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA).

The report in part states “… cell entry inhibitors, like the acids from hemp, could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells. They bind to the spike proteins so those proteins can’t bind to the ACE2 enzyme, which is abundant on the outer membrane of endothelial cells in the lungs and other organs.” In fact, with their history of safe use, it was noted that the compounds may be taken orally and have the potential to both prevent and treat infection by SARS-CoV-2 (i.e. Covid-19).

The researchers did point out that resistant variations could potentially emerge as a result of widespread use of cannabinoids, but that the combination of vaccination and CBDA/CBGA treatment should make it more difficult for SARS-CoV-2 to thrive. Indeed, there is real hope that in time, herbal drugs from these cannabis compounds will present a natural form of medication that will help to control / inhibit the Covid-19 pandemic.

CBD Blocked SARS-CoV-2 Replication in Human Cells

Equally important, is a second study which reported that Cannabidiol (CBD), inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication. This one was conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago and reported in the scientific journal Science Advances on January 20, 2022. The scientists were able to conclude that CBD inhibits infection of SARS-CoV-2 in cells and mice. In addition to that, it was discovered that CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD “potently block SARS-CoV-2 replication in lung epithelial cells.” This is in reference to human lung cells.

By digging a little deeper, we found that another important statement from the study is that “CBD acts after viral entry, inhibiting viral gene expression and reversing many effects of SARS-CoV-2 on host gene transcription.” Clearly, the implication is that, not only can CBD slow progression of the Covid-19 disease but it can also procure the reversal of certain related impairment.

The researchers have posited that CBD is a potential preventative agent for early-stage SARS-CoV-2 infection and that it merits future clinical trials. However, they cautioned against non-medical formulations as remedy.

Self Medication Not Supported

In a nutshell, it is possible that pharmaceutical-grade cannabis compounds may one day be used to supplement Covid-19 vaccines in a bid to control the pandemic. Each study identified different chemical compounds that can arrest the disease, thereby increasing the probability of an effective drug being developed from cannabis. However, no one should smoke weed or obtain over-the-counter CBD products as medication for Covid-19.

Ancient "Liberator"

“…. the herb is listed as a joy-giver and liberator in the Vedas, an ancient Indian religious text dating back to roughly 1500 BCE.”

19th Century Endorsement

“During the 19th century, many American and European medical journals endorsed hemp seeds and roots for a variety of ailments, including incontinence, irritated skin and even sexually transmitted diseases.”

Effective Treatment

"Of course, the cannabis plant has had both medicinal and psychotropic applications since antiquity, but that fact was dispensed with to achieve the ill-advised objectives of certain special interest groups that wanted it banned. The effect of marijuana on the brain – a concern when used recreationally – certainly requires serious study. However, there is clear scientific evidence that extracts from this plant are effective in treating a number of medical conditions. "

Safe When Used Under Medical Guidance

“It is undeniable that both CBD and THC have medical benefits and are considered safe when used under proper medical guidance.”

THC vs CBD vs CBN

“THC, CBD and CBN all interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system but the effects are not the same. To explain, CBD and CBN are non-intoxicating while THC is the main psychoactive compound of marijuana.”

91% of US Adults Support Legalization

Pew Research Center reported in April 2021 that 91 percent of US adults support marijuana legalization, with 60 percent supporting both medicinal and recreational use and 31 percent supporting only medical use. Only 8% of adults were completely opposed to legalization.

Increased Sales to Women

Currently (2022), roughly half of the populace reside in states where marijuana use by adults is legal and these figures are on an upward trend. Interestingly, research by Headset Data which was published online on January 31, 2022, revealed that while both men and women have bought more cannabis since 2020, sales to females show a higher rate of increase. Sales to men increased by 49%, but for women the increase was 55%.

Enforcement of Marijuana Laws Accompanied by Racism

Importantly, this website has already pointed out that even while marijuana laws are being reformed in most US states, the enforcement of these laws is accompanied by racism. Another important report by the ACLU in 2020 stated that “In every state, and in over 96 percent of the counties examined, Black people were much more likely to be arrested than white people for marijuana possession. Overall, these disparities have not improved. On average, a black person is 3.64 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than a white person, even though Black and white people use marijuana at similar rates. In 10 states, Blacks were more than five times more likely to be arrested.”

Decriminalization vs Legalization

Decriminalization of marijuana is not the same as legalization of the drug. Therefore, in areas where such policies are applicable, an appreciation of the difference may save a lot of trouble. The Merriam-Webster dictionary (online 5 Jan. 2022) defines decriminalize as follows:
“to remove or reduce the criminal classification or status of;
especially: to repeal a strict ban on while keeping under some form of regulation.”

Decriminalization usually entails no arrest, no jail time, and no criminal record in relation to the possession of a specified (relatively small) quantity of marijuana. The offender typically receives a civil citation which may lead to a fine.

On the other hand, legalization of marijuana generally means that its possession and use are permitted by law, subject to the stipulations stated in the specific law/s. The matter of arrest would only arise if a person exceeds the provisions of the law.
