Cannabis Transdermal Patch | The THC Medicine Patch
First Published May 10, 2023
What is a Cannabis Transdermal Patch?
A Cannabis Transdermal Patch is a thin plastic sticker infused with THC and maybe other cannabinoids. As such, they are sometimes called THC Patches. The patch goes straight onto the skin just like a nicotine patch, but what the user gets is a slow release of cannabis extracts that interact with the human endocannabinoid system to remedy pain and a number of other ailments.
According to Arbors Wellness, these transdermal applications are available “in various cannabinoid types including Sativa THC, Indica THC, CBD, and a 1:1 ratio of THC and CBD.”
THC patches are not made to cause a “high” sensation. Characteristically, the chemical compounds are absorbed by the user’s body slowly over several hours, keeping the concentration low. As a result, if there is any euphoric feeling, it should be rather mild. The effect is very different from the rush one would get from smoking. Local Roots explains that THC patches are “for those with real medical issues who need the healing effects of THC.”
Since many users of marijuana products do not know about cannabis transdermal patches, they are not yet widely available in retail cannabis outlets. Another hindrance to their use is that these preparations are comparatively expensive and may not be covered by health insurance.

How Are Cannabis Transdermal Patches Used?
Generally speaking, patches are designed for the active ingredients to be absorbed through the outer layers of the skin and pulled into the bloodstream. The drugs are then distributed throughout the body. This provides for a more consistent and long-lasting dose during the patch’s wear time. In contrast, other topicals such as balms and creams treat symptoms at the particular area of the skin where applied.
As explained on the Green Flower website, the cannabis transdermal patch is designed to be applied directly onto a venous part of the skin such as the inner part of the wrist, leg or top of the foot. Once in place, you will have anywhere between 8 and 96 hours of regulated release of the cannabis medicinal compounds into your bloodstream. This eliminates the need to manually take several small doses of drugs throughout the day.
A patch allows for discrete placement on the body, thereby removing scrutiny from the entire medication process. Those laden with THC perform like tinctures which are also absorbed into the bloodstream albeit at a different rate.
Benefits of Cannabis / THC Transdermal Patches
In spite of the relatively high cost, cannabis transdermal patches do have advantages. For one, they offer an easy, non-invasive and effective way to intake THC. Secondly, they are unlikely to attract the possible social uneasiness associated with smoking marijuana. Additional benefits are outlined below.
Relief From Several Medical Conditions – The THC transdermal patch, in particular, is mostly used to treat chronic pain such as arthritis. However, patients can also derive extended relief from a range of conditions such as inflammation, anxiety, nausea and insomnia. All this without any major psychoactive effect.
Precise Dosage – Each patch delivers a precise dose on every occasion used, as opposed to the loose results obtained from smoking and consumption of edibles.

Discreet Consumption – For those who wish to be discreet in their consumption of medical marijuana extracts, the transdermal patch may be given special consideration. They can be worn under your garments and will not be conspicuous at social gatherings or while traversing public spaces.
Infrequent Dosing – Since the patches are designed to remain on your body for extended periods, you will not need to dose multiple times per day.
Drug Testing, Productivity and Other Considerations
Owing to the fact that cannabis transdermal patches allow cannabinoids to be directly absorbed into the blood stream, this may pose concerns for drug testing at work. Notwithstanding the fact that the slow absorption of the drugs would not be expected to cause a “high” or seriously alter productivity for most jobs.
When all the factors are considered, one can understand why there is such a small market share of cannabis patches. However, research is ongoing, and with possible new configurations and dissemination of information, the profile of this product may rise.
