Cannabis / THC Infused Beverages: Emerging Trend

A variety of Cannabis Infused Drinks are Available

Do Cannabis-Infused Drinks Get You High?

There is a rise in the popularity of Cannabis-infused drinks and they are becoming more readily available. As more people seek to shake pandemic fatigue, they are eager to get on with their favorite forms of socialization. With this in mind, cannabis beverages are in the running for party drinks of choice, especially for those who do not wish to consume alcohol. Specifically, these brews are likely to be attractive to those who seek to consume marijuana in a social setting without having to smoke.

A THC-Infused drink would provide the herbal benefits through an unobjectionable mode of delivery. In addition to that, such drinks offer dosage predictability as would be required for medical marijuana, even more so than cannabis edibles. Be aware though, that depending on the concentration of THC, a cannabis beverage could get you high.

Chart Showing Cannabis Drinks Growth 2019 - 2020

Market Growth for Cannabis-Infused Drinks

Since they are not known to cause hangovers and are relatively low in calories, cannabis beverages are well positioned for increased consumption particularly among younger generations. Cannabis & Tech Today stated  in December of 2021 that “a recent report from data analysts, Headset statistics show that Gen Z consume 20% less alcohol than Millennials did at the same age.”

The article also claimed “sales of no- and low-alcoholic beverages rose 30% in 2020 and are expected to continue to grow 31% by 2024, according to a report by market research firm IWSR. Meanwhile, the U.S. cannabis beverages market grew from $67.8 million in 2019 to $85.2 million in 2020.” View article at: https://cannatechtoday.com/7-uplifting-cbd-and-thc-drinks-for-the-holidays/.

Social Cannabis Drinks: Challenges and Opportunities

Accounting for roughly 5% of the cannabis “edibles” market (Beverage Industry report), drinks  infused with THC may include iced tea, beers, canned cocktails, wines, seltzers and more. They come in a variety of flavors and several are available on the market. A full roll out in the US is hampered by the federal blockade on marijuana and cannabis commerce generally. As restrictions on marijuana are lifted, the popularity of these drinks will rise and there will be a much larger selection.

In fact, it has been said that some of the biggest names in beer and sugary drinks production are set to blend their own cannabis-infused beverages. There is also the stirring prospect of breeding new strains of marijuana specifically for this market.

Of course, both the makers and retailers of cannabis beverages must meet the logistical challenges and relatively high cost of transporting cannabis in this form. Other configurations, like edibles, are much smaller and easier to distribute. However, the lure of all natural ingredients, exciting fruit flavors and very low calories, among others, ensure that the industry of cannabis beverages remains on a growth path.
